The Wife of Cross River State
Governor, Dr Linda Ayade led the biggest global
hand washing campaign in Nigeria. The campaign which had the Honorable Minister
for water resources and the deputy Governor of Lagos state in attendance, held
in Lagos sponsored by PZ Cussons and United Purpose (Concern Universal ) on
15th October, 2017 the day set aside to mark Global Hand washing day. The aim
was to educate children on the importance of effective hand washing and general
hygiene.
Dr Linda Ayade urged the citizens to adopt regular Hand
Washing as the best vaccine against preventable diseases.
The theme of this year's World Hand Washing Day, Our
Hands; Our Future, brings to mind the need of making frantic efforts to keep
our hands clean, as this forms the basis of a healthy and productive nation. I
have lived a very healthy life probably because I cultivated the habit of
washing my hands over a dozen times a day from my childhood".
She went on to state that effective hand washing save millions
of lives and it’s the most cost effective way of preventing contactable
diseases more potent than any vaccine known to man.
The Governor wife was accompanied to the event by
Honorable Commissioner for Health, Dr Inyang Asibong, Director General of the
Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Betta Edu who
reiterated Cross River State commitment to partner with PZ Cussons and United
Purpose to ensure every community in Cross River State is properly sensitized
on the essence of hand washing hygiene.
While Mediatrix Development Foundation has committed to
partnering with water board limited to provide running water in primary and
secondary schools across the state.
The event which took place at the prestigious Oriental
Hotel Lekki, Lagos saw over 2,000 children from 180 schools empowered with
hygiene knowledge to return to their schools and communities to spread the
campaign’s vital message of effective hand washing. They had competition on
hand washing and brain point school came first.
It would be recall that the Wife of Cross River State
Governor, Dr Linda Ayade had earlier held a breakfast meeting with Global hand
washing partners across the nation in her office in commemoration of the World
Hand Washing week celebration with the presence of the Country Director of
United Purpose, Mr Tim Connell where she signed onto hand washing declaration.
The Lagos event also featured Hand washing Day theme song
(Wash Your Hands O!) created by Concern Universal’s brand ambassador, Sunny
Neji who sang to the admiration of the participants.
The event had dignitaries such as
representative of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Solarin Titilayo,
National Coordinator WSSCC Nigeria, Mrs. Priscilla Acharya, Director, SON,
Directors from NAFDAC, Mrs Maureem Ebigbeyi, Pharm. Owolabi, Dr. Monica Ejembe,
the Honorable Commissioner of Youth and Sport, Lagos State, Mr Lanre Rufai as
well the Managing Director, Family Care, PZ Cussons Nigeria, Mr Alex Goma
amongst others.
