Breaking: Police arrest NANS President, UNIOYU President, 8 others for murder,cultism etc

Information reaching our news desk has it that the President of National Association of Nigerian Students  (NANS ) in Bayelsa State, Perewari Benjamin and the President, Students Union Government of the University of Uyo, Duff Gabriel Enyeneokpon alongside 8 other Students have been arrested by men of the Bayelsa state Police Command  in connection with the murder of a law student of the university, Magam Elvis and other vices bordering on cultism, robbery etc.

Elvis was shot dead during elections for coordinators of National Union of Nigerian Students, NANS held at the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State. He died as a result of bullet wound injury. His body has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.

Police have confirmed the arrest of eight students, including the NANS President in Bayelsa State, Perewari Benjamin for involving in armed robbery and cultism, while Etefia Otobong Harrison and Akwaoso Uwakmfon all of University of Uyo were arrested for attempting to kill one Tonye Samuel of University of Port Harcourt during NANS registration.

The Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Mr Asuquo Amba who paraded the suspects on Monday at the Command Headquarters, Yenagoa, condemned a situation where students representing universities and higher institutions in the South- South zone degenerated to the use of fire arms leading to the death of a student and student involving themselves in robbery against innocent citizens.

When Contacted, NANS President Obasi Chinonso said the opening ceremony of the convention witnessed clashes among contending aspirants over who sowuld represent the state at the zonal leadership of NANS. 

“The incident which occurred at the Zone B Election for Coordinators of NANS at the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, between November 25 and November 26 had the Vice- Chancellor, Federal University, Otueke, Prof Accra Seth Jaja, had addressing the students to be law-abiding and that only accredited delegates will proceed to the hall for the elections. But, later gunshot was heard from the crowd outside the hall.

Police Commissioner said three suspects, Emmanuel Ebere, Obiakarije Innocent and Iniobong Okon Ben have been arrested for the suspected murder.

He also disclosed that Benjamin as NANS Bayelsa President, with seven other suspects from Niger Delta University, namely Asari Enagob, Suoguai Bina, Ibe Ogbonna, Igbanibo Tari, Ekperi Kenneth, Kemefie Ebimene and Chukuma Lawrence from Imo State Polytechnic allegedly hijacked a commercial vehicle from Ayo Kehinde and allegedly robbed him of his Tecno phone and N50,000 cash.

He said that two locally made single barrel pistol, two live ammunition, five. 9mm live ammunition and two charms were recovered from the suspects.

Amba, who assured that the suspects would be charged to court at the completion of investigations, appealed to parents to discourage their wards from crime as the Police would ensure criminals face the full wrath of the law..

This leaves one to wonder about the future of our great nation. The development calls for a drastic action to curb this menace and a complete reorientation of our youths.
