The long standing grouse between Oku Iboku in Itu local government area of Akwa Ibom State and Ikot Offiong in Odukpani local government area of Cross River state was hightened over the weekend as nebghouring Oku Iboku launched a deadly attack on Ikot Offiong destroying lives and properties.

According to the Youth leader of Ikot Offiong,  Ekanem Bassey Asuquo, 15 persons has been confirmed dead and over 20 paddle canoes has been carted away with other fishing accessories.

Asuquo disclosed that the first attack launched by Oku Iboku at about 6am on Sunday May, 6th 2018 was initially resisted by the brave youths of Ikot Offiong, forcing Oku Iboku to retreat to their part of the head bridge. Only for over 100 youths of Oku to resurface at about 2pm with sophisticated weapons such as pump actions, Ak47's, several speedboats and 10 tricycles launching a baneful attack on the people of Ikot Offiong where several lives and properties were destroyed.

Another eye witness revealed that while the attack was ongoing,  soldiers situated at the Akwa Ibom end of the head bridge were seen crossing over to this other end in a bid to stop Ikot Offiong from defending themselves while Oku Iboku had a field day.

It is also believed that the Oku Iboku youth might have been sponsored by the Akwa Ibom state government owing to the sophistication of their weapons and the alleged support they had from security agents who were supposed to defend and save lives and properties.

We are calling on the Cross River state government to come to our aid by beefing up security around the water ways from bridge head to Inua Akpa to Ikoneto. Though, we are disappointed with gov Ben Ayade for abandoning us'. The Youth council chairman of Odukpani, comrade Philip Okon added in a statement.

It should be recalled that the National Boundary commission was supposed to carried out a physical demarcation exercise in the area, but it is disheartening to know that nothing o such as been done till date.

A source familiar with the case revealed told our reporters 'Infact they(Akwa Ibom state government) are trying to make sure the demarcation don't take place.
And we are so disappointed that Ayade also is running from responsibility.
My brother, there is more that meets the eyes as it concerns that crisis'.  He said

'Inua Akpa, Ikoneto and Ikot Offiong communities are suffering today because our Leaders sale us out. cross river state government is not interested in providing security to protect those in border'. He concluded.
