Congregants at the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Hope Waddle Parish and Cross Riverians alike who attended the memorial service of late Mrs. Temitope Ita Ekpenyong, wife of Ita Ekpenyong the ex-DG of the Department of Security Service, were said to have been hard on the governor of Cross River State, Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade.

According to TDN reporter, attendees cheered, clapped and celebrated various dignitaries especially governors from various states of the federation who were called upon to read their condolence messages, with Donald Duke former governor of the state receiving the highest ovation.

Governor Ben Ayade on the contrary was booed when he was called upon to read his condolence message. The booing was said to have been instigated by the governor's absence at the burial ceremony of such a high profile Nigerian and a Cross Riverian for that matter. As soon as the deputy governor who represented him announced that Governor Ayade was out of the country in far away Noway for an official assignment, instead of the cheering and the clapping accorded to other governors, the crowd went gaga with an uncontrollable booing and shouting.

The embarrassing situation which lasted long enough to cause shame and humiliation while forcing the service to come to a standstill was put under control by the intervention of the widower, Ita Ekpenyong who stood up and appeal to the crowd to calm down.
Worst of it all was the fact that it was aired live on a National broadcast across the country on AIT.

Speaking with a member of the church who refused to disclose her identity, TDN learnt that the governor was booed because he failed to attend such an important function that attracted the presence of other state governors into his state.

"Why will he not plan to attend such a national event that brought in governors and dignitaries from other state into his state? Other governors canceled important functions and assignments to be here and he is busy as usual signing MoU's that have never seen the light of the day". She queried.

Another member of the church, Mr. Okon Ayara who was in the service said he felt satisfied with the national embarrassment Cross Riverians gave to the governor, stating that it was a message to him, even as he prayed the governor listens to the yearnings of the citizens.

" We are tired of his numerous traveling, he wanted to be governor let him sit down and govern the state, his numerous absence cost him a lot in his last tenure. He must wake up and do the work he was voted for. All the journeys he embarked on in his first term were all in futility." Ayara concluded.
