Calabar - The management team and players of the Rovers Football Club of Calabar has hailed the digital Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade for what they described as "His Passion for the team".

In a statement made available to TDN, the team's general manager, Mr. Ejen Ebam said the governor has demonstrated much passion for the team which he said had led the little successes recorded so far. Speaking, Ebam noted that the team is currently ranking third on the log table of the Nigeria National League and they are working so hard to keep the state colours flying high as they are just a step away from the Nigerian Premiere League.

He however, drew the governor's attention to some basic welfare needs of the team such as salaries, allowances and other logistics to enable the team honor matches and arrive match venues on time in good spirit and form, he also assured the governor that the players are all determined, committed and enthusiastic to make the state proud.

Ebam who noted that Sports is one of the fasted and most rewarding avenues of engaging youths and reducing youth related crimes in the society, thanked the governor for the supports and assistance the team has enjoyed so far, even as he called on the government to look into the welfare of the players.

It is worthy to note that Rovers FC of Calabar has over the years running into decades kept the flag of Cross River Sate flying even when other football teams had sprang up vanish almost immediately because of the financial burden of building and managing a team, especially in Nigeria where the Nigerian factor comes up in almost everything. But in it all Rovers FC is still standing.

World over, sports is an economy of its own which so much benefits and dividends, it is diverse in nature, but very expensive to manage. Yet the reward is limitless. Therefore, there's a strong need for the government of Cross River State to be interested in investing heavily in sports activities especially to keep her youths productively busy.

Cross River state is known as the hub of tourism in the country. Recently, it was in the news that the present government is making plans to invest into medical tourism, it is on this premise that I also call the governor's attention to the the almost sorry nature of our sports men and women who are willing and determined to go the extra mile for the state. That the state should also relate to them correspondingly by assisting in whatever small measures. Especially basic welfare needs.
