2020 national Budget: Ayade’s aide slams Buhari over poor health sector budget

By Ukorebi Esien

A member of the Cross River State Economic team recently set up by the state governor and a former Director General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Betta Edu has a taken a swipe at the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, over poor funding of the Health sector in Nigeria.

Dr. Edu, in a statement issued via her social media handle lamented the poor state of the health sector in the nation stating that the amount budgeted for the sector in this year's national budget of over N10 trillion is too meager to cater for the health needs of the smallest in the country talk more of reviving the comatose health sector in the country.

Edu reasoned that the President's health status should have been a good motivation to improve the sector's funding in this year's budget. While she  accused the nation's leaders of deliberately trying to bury the health sector that is already in comatose with no viable Health Insurance policy, revealing that even after 20 years of operating the National Health Insurance Scheme, over 98% of the population can't still afford good Healthcare.

"...President Buhari presented a budget of 10 Trillion Naira and the health Budget is just N46 billion....46 billion Naira will not be enough to revamp the comatose health system even in a small state and this is what is budgeted for a whole country". She said.

"For a President whose health is challenged one would think he should know better and budget more to revamp the health system in this country.

"Can't we come off our high horses and think about the poor woman in my village who doesn't have access to tax payers money to spend outside this country". She queried.

"Every year we lose billions on medical tourism.... health workers are leaving in their thousands seeking greener pastures... Am just so pained! "Am sick and tired of being sick and tired! She lamented.

Dr. Betta Edu used the opportunity to call on the National Assembly to as a matter of national interest ensure there's is significant increase of the health sector budget when they begin working on the budget presented to them by Mr. President, stating that an ailing Community can't grow the Nation's economy.

"I call on the National Assembly to ensure that they improve on the health budget because you can not have economic growth with an ailing population. No health no wealth!

This is not about party or person but our joint interest as a people... we must save the health sector or those terrible indices like being the country with the 2nd highest maternal mortality in the world will remain". She concluded.
