Int'l Day for the girl child: C'River lawmaker vows to give the girl child equal opportunity in Abi

Hon. (Dr.) Davis Etta, Member representing Abi in the Cross River State House of Assembly

Ukorebi Esien | 12th October 2019

Hon. Davis Etta, member representing Abi State Constituency in the 9th Cross River State House of Assembly has joined his voice to decry the neglect and marginalization of the girl child in Abi, Cross River State and by extension Nigeria.

The lawmaker who made this known in a press release issued yesterday to mark the 2019 edition of the day of the girl child said it was time the government and society at large began to give serious attention on the girl child, stating that the girl child is a pride to every home.

His statement reads in full:

The girl child: our Unscripted Pride, our Unstoppable Future

As the world today through the United Nations celebrates the girl child, with the theme: "Girl Force: Unscripted, Unstoppable", I Hon. (Dr.)Davis Etta join the good people of Abi State constituency to amplify the little voices of the girl child in Abi, nay Cross River State and re-echo the need for equality both in our families, schools, work place, churches, government establishments and the society at large.

It is worthy to note that the existence of human life on the earth is impossible without the equal participation of both women and men. They are equally responsible for the survival of the human race on the earth. They are also liable for the development and growth of a nation.
Without the girl child, we cannot think about our existence. So, to save humans from extinction we have to take measures to save the girl child.

It's a common practice in our society to give preference to the boy child, neglecting the importance and needs of the girl child, in the real sense, this shouldn't be. Rather, the girl child should be saved and given equal opportunity, and respect and opportunity to go ahead in life. The desire to have a male child have led many men to neglect and abandoned their girl children, some have even abused their female children out of hatred and frustration. We have to embrace the new realities of life, gone are those days where the female child is not allowed to go to school and is made to work for the educational advancement of the male child.

Female children are also gifts from God, they also have a destiny to fulfill, as such parents, government and society should provide the necessary leverages for them to exploit and live a meaningful live, parents should stop sending the girl child out for sex trade, early marriages and other harmful activities. The girl child needs to be protected and given equal Opportunities. And this must be done unscripted because they are unstoppable.

It is at this juncture that I totally condemned any act of marginalization, inequality and abandonment on the girl child even as I call on the good people of Abi State Constituency to ensure their female children are given the same priority with the boy child.

I also call on government and relevant agencies to strengthen existing policies and laws that empowers the education, inclusiveness and equality of the girl child. Government should run programs that will sensitise rural and urban dwellers alike on the need to protect and educate the girl child, giving them equal opportunities in life.

On my part, I will see to it that more laws and policies that will build institutions that will promote the inclusiveness and equality of the girl child in Abi and Cross River State by extension are enacted, using my position a a honorable member of the House.

Once again I wish every girl child of Abi origin and residence a Happy Girl Child Day Celebration.

Hon. (Dr.) Davis Etta
Member representing Abi in the Cross River State House of Assembly
