INEC fix date for elections rerun in Abi, other

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has announced the date to hold the rerun elections in Abi for the Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency and Abi state House elections and other 26 outstanding court-ordered rerun elections. 

The Election umpire who fixed Saturday 25th January 2020 for the rerun and supplementary elections disclosed this in an information contained in a press release issued at the commission's 51st regular meeting held today 5th December, 2019 on the INEC Official verified twitter handle @inecnigeria.

During the meeting, the commission discussed rerun elections arising from petitions following the 2019 general elections.

The commission stated that there were 30 Court ordered rerun and supplementary rerun elections but two of these rerun elections, Ajaokuta Federal Constituency and the supplementary rerun for the Kogi West Senatorial District were conducted on 30th, November, 2019.

The commission however, said that there are 28 Court-ordered elections still outstanding which are distributed across 12 states of the Federation. The break down comprises of one senatorial district out of 109, 12 Federal Constituencies out of 360 and 15 state assembly constituencies out of 991.

After consideration of several issues surrounding the rerun elections, including the time needed for preparations and intervention of the Yuletide, the commission decided to hold all 28 outstanding court-ordered rerun elections on Saturday 25th January, 2020.

The commission further wishes to assured Nigerians that it is doing everything within its capacity to ensure that elections are free, fair and credible. It also solicits for understanding, support and commitment of all stakeholders and agencies involved in the election to achieve it purpose.

It should be recalled that the Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Calabar had ordered a rerun in 15 polling units in the Abi state Constituency and in the two council wards of Ekureku one and two of Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency.
