Illegal Trading: C/River Govt Commences work on New Market

Cross River State Government has commenced construction of new market for roadside traders around Watt Market, Calabar.

The Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Mfon Bassey, who expressed government preparedness to relocate such traders, said the demand for a new market became necessary due to population explosion and the corresponding danger associated with roadside trading.

Speaking during supervision of work at the site, adjacent Red Cross Office, Calabar Road, the Commissioner said the government is committed to providing improved social amenities for the overall interest of it citizenry.

According to Hon. Bassey, Governor Ayade whose love and passion for his people is unreserved, is working tirelessly to ensure that no Cross Riverian or resident is plunged into untold suffering, hence the speedy action to provide an alternative market for roadside traders within the shortest possible period.

The Commissioner applauded the prompt response of the Governor over the new market, while assuring that allocation would be done fairly without fear or favour.

The Environment Boss called on traders to be patient while work continues, adding that in a few weeks, arrangement would have be concluded for them move to the new market to avoid sanctions from constituted authority.

He admonished traders to remain law abiding in keeping their environment clean and green, adding that the government will not compromise standards for which the state has been reputed for overtime.

The Commissioner also hinted that a toilet facility as well as borehole will be constructed so as to improve sanitation in the market.

Mr Ayi Etim, a Trader, expressed gratitude to the State Government for providing an alternative market, saying he is impressed with the pace of work already carried out.

When asked if the market was not hidden, Mr Etim said once buyers know were they can fine their needs, they would come irrespective of the location.
