Minimum wage and corp members by Victor Adaha

The noise coming from some uninformed quarters that President Muhammadu Buhari has increased Corp members allowance is not just uninformed but misleading.

First of all, the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) scheme is a legislative piece and moreso, the act that established the scheme did well by (arguable)  ensuring the welfare of her members by adding that the members be entitled to a minimum wage. which became law and binding any alteration must pass through the National Assembly to hold water.

Hence it is immaterial whether the president in any administration likes it or not, once minimum wage is reviewed upward it affects the scheme, as salaries of Corp members also goes in accordance with the new scheme. That is why the members cant fight for pay increase because their pay is dependent on the National minimum wage scheme.

But my question is, why should these graduate be paid as the lowest cadres in the FG pay scheme?. forget not that they are full graduates, Barristers already called to Bar, Doctors already inducted, Teachers already inducted and the list goes on and on.

my agitation is that these members, place value in the FG salary scheme be reviewed upward to reflect their real state or at least something close to it. In my informed opinion this will change most members attitude to the scheme, they will hence begin to see it as something serious , as a work and call to duty, not a one year of vacation within the country after their university mixed experience.
It should be well considered as a tangible work experience by law. finally members should be posted to PPA (Place of Primary Assignment) with correlation to their field of study.
