C'River North by-election: Tension as political parties agree to zone elections

Ukorebi Esien | 27th July, 2020

CALABAR: There seems to be tension and uncertainty in the air amongst the various contenders of the Northern Senatorial District's by-election as a coalition of political parties in the state under the auspices of Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, CNPP has fixed a date to choose which local government area to zone the senatorial by-election seat to.

According to a press statement issued by the coalition, Saturday 25th July, 3rd of August 2020 has been fixed as a date when they will meet to chose a Local Government Area in the Northern Senatorial District where Political Parties Candidates will be nominated from.

The statement also made it clear that "Political Parties are the only platforms through which elections are contested and as such, they need to give direction in circumstances like this becomes imperative, stating that, the condition responsible for the forthcoming bye-election is not what should be gloried in, therefore, there's need to approach this election with sobriety, thus the need for an amicable zoning formula.

The  statement reads in full;

CONFERENCE OF NIGERIA POLITICAL PARTIES

OFFICE OF THE CHAIRMAN

25th July 2020

PRESS RELEASE

Following the death of our amiable mother and an Amazon, Distinguished Senator Dr. Rose Oko, The Senator representing Cross River North in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Political Parties in Cross River State have met and are in the concluding stage of taking a decision on the local government to zone the Northern Senatorial ticket.

It is instructive to note that Political Parties are the only platforms through which elections are contested and as such, they need to give direction in circumstances like this becomes imperative. This was the same model used in 2015 in zoning the office of the Governor to Cross River North.

The condition responsible for the forthcoming bye-election is not what we should glory in, to this end we decided to approach this election with sobriety, accordingly, the Political Parties in Cross River State have fixed  3rd August 2020 to chose a Local Government Area in the Northern Senatorial District where Political Parties Candidates will be nominated from.

Our decisions will be communicated in a detailed report to all registered  Political Parties Headquarters in Abuja.
God bless Cross River State.

The Northen senatorial district by-election has brought so much rancur and infighting amongst parties as to which local government should produce the next senator, while many beleived the position should remain in Yala so as to complete the late senators tenure, some are of the opinion that Ogoja should have their first short at the office, yet another group think the Obudu man should go complete Obudu's two term which Ayade abandoned for governorship leaving the seat for the Rose Oko.

Therefore, the stepping of political parties to zone the seat may just be another step in the right direction taken by the group.
