Red Cross intensifies fight against COVID-19 through Risk Communication in Anambra state

AWKA: As the global fight against the novel coronavirus code named Covid19 continues to take different dimensions, the Nigeria Red Cross Society in Akwa, Anambra State has said risk communication is a valuable tool to help debunk some of the myths sorounding Covid19 stating that these myths militates against achieving good result in the fight against the Pandemic.

Speaking in an interview in Akwa, the state secretary of the Health volunteering organization, Engr Kingsley Okoye informed that the Red Cross Society, with its over 16,000 volunteers in Awka is positioned to intensify its fight against the global pandemic with intense Risk Communication activities in the three local government areas of Awka South LGA, Idemmili South LGA and Ogbaru LGA in Anambra State. 

Okoye who disclosed that no stone would be left unturned in ensuring the risk communication messages gets to the grass roots begining with the 3 LGA mentioned and to other parts of the state through the strong grass root structure of Red Cross in Anambra State with volunteers in all the 21 local governments in Anambra State.

Furthermore, he said some of the key messages of the risk communication will be centered on Proper hand washing and general hygiene practise, Proper use of face mask, Use of hand sanitizer, Social distancing, Avoiding Toucing of eyes, ear and nose with unwashed hands and several others. 

He informed that for the first week of the activity, there has been several feedbacks gathered from over ten communities visited so far; some community dwellers do not believe that the disease is real while some who acknowledge the reality of the disease believe it's not a black man ailment. 

The state Secretary said, these and many more are among the myths hovering arround the Covid 19 which the volunteer risk communicators has been redirecting in the communities.

The Communication Cordinator of Nigerian Red Cross Society Anambra State, Mr Fidelis Ikeji told, this news house that their activities in these local government areas will be aimed at dousing these myths through risk communication.
