Pandemonium in Ekorinim community as Police shoots Youth leader

The victim in an undisclosed medical Facility

Ekorinim community in Cross River State is hot on fire as a community Chief is said to be moving from house to house arresting community youths after ordering his security details to shoot at the community deputy youth leader.

According to Dr. Eyo Edet a member of the Ekorinim Youths council, Chief Nyong has been terrorising the community for the past 10 years, "his behavior has become unrully and a threat to the peace of the community"

Mr. Augstine Eyo Nyong, one of the youth leaders in Ekorinim community informed TDN that trouble started when the youths as part of the tradition of the community approached a building cite requesting for development levy from the owner. On their way back, they were attacked by Chief Ita Nyong who was accompanied by his two sons each hold matchet and sticks and two armed police officers. Chief Nyong later ordered the policemen to open fire at them, thereby shooting their deputy youth leader on the leg.

"As it is in our tradition and a well established practice in most African communities, some members of our taxforce went out to collect community development levy from a new developer who had previously refused to pay the said levy. Unfortunately he wasn't in his building cite. On our way back we met with Chief Ita Nyong who asked us to go back and we told him we are going to our respective houses and we can't go back to the building cite since the owner wasn't around.
"When we refused to go back he ordered his security details to shoot at us, stating that we are criminals and kidnappers.

It's was at this instance that the mopol officers opened fire at us shooting our deputy youth leader in the leg. As we speak the young man is in the hospital battling with his life".

We are using this medium to demand justice that the police officers who carried out that unlawful act be brought to book and Chief should be arrested and prosecuted for the multiple crimes md atrocities he has committed in our community." He said.

Also speaking, a member of the Ekorinim Leaders Council said the said Chief is notorious for selling of community lands, causing havock in the community and currently has over four different cases in court with both the community Community, the Youth Council and some individuals in the community.

Dr. Eyo, alleged that Chief Ita Nyong illegally got 2 mobile police men as security details from the Nigerian Police Force which he uses to intimidate and terrorise innocent citizens of the community.

When the Police Public Relations Officer DSP Irene Ugbe was contacted on phone by this newspaper, she informed that she's not aware of the development but will get back as soon as she gathers any useful information.
