'Sunday - Sunday Show' set to return in Calabar as Cultural Center takes a new look

For those of us who are lovers and ardent followers of shows in Calabar we can agree to the fact that Sunday Sunday Shows which was usually staged at the cultural center complex came with its unique vibes and content that gives the general public an option for family outings aside the usual Marian Road buzzing events where Parents couldn't sit out with their children for obvious reasons.

In a recent interactions with the management of the new Cultural Center, shortly after a facility tour embarked upon by our journalists, TDN learnt that there's a grand plan to rebrand and return the 'Sunday-Sunday show' along side other activities and shows to keep the center busy for its numerous fans.

It should be recalled that only recently, precisely about a year ago, the Executive Governor of Cross River State thought it wise to appoint an SSA in charge of the Cultural center facility and this gave rise to a near complete overhauling of the facility ranging from infrastructural development to a change in management, formation of new policies. etc. Upon arrival, one of the first things the new Senior Special Adviser on Cultural Center, Hon Victor Ekpo-Ita did was to market the facility to investors.

A Lagos based event management company, Peniel Network Investment Ltd with with good business track records spanning over 10 years quickly jumped at the opportunity and got the node of the state government to manage Cultural Center Calabar. It is also important to note that the cultural center Calabar which was built for arts and theater is only second to the National Art Theater in Igomu, Lagos and is a premium event centre which in the wisdom of the the erstwhile military governor, U. J. Esuene was to promote event tourism since Cross River is known for tourism, the Cultural Centre was to fulfil that event side of tourism

In the words of Victor Ekpo, Senior Special Adviser to Governor Ben Ayade on Cultural Center, "For us the new Cultural Centre is the new focus. If you check, I must say with some sense of pride, Cultural Centre is a premium event Centre in the city of Calabar, and indeed in the entire region. You know why? If you have an event, your guests can go back anytime and anywhere. It is a few minutes away from Transcorp Hotels a five-star hotel, it is a few minutes away from the Government House, it is a few minutes away from the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, also very close to the U. J. Esuene Sport Stadium. So, Cultural Centre remains the ideal venue for any form of event''.

He went further to disclose that the partnership with Peniel which is a PPP has yielded so much within just a period of 7 months, adding that the recently attached arts, craft and cultural village would be a melting pot for arts and crafts in the state. For him, the village would provide a platform for Departments of Arts, Mass Communication and other related discipline in both the University of Calabar and University of Cross River (UNICROSS) to showcase their products.

Speaking also, Mr Azubuike Jibunoh, Director, Peniel Network Limited, disclosed that arrangement would soon be finalized for staging the 'Tehila and Super Laughter, stating that the two gospel shows will be held at the Cultural Center, between April and May this year. He also informed that plans are in top gear to rebrand and reintroduce Sunday Sunday Shows and other attractions such a cinema.

He added Peniel which as been in the facility management business for over 10 years, will restore the Calabar Cultural Centre in line with what is obtainable elsewhere.

Earlier on, the SSA and officials of Peneil had conducted newsmen round the upgraded facilities in the complex, such as the lobby, Foya, the 1,500 capacity main bowl with the biggest back stage, scene dock, power house and the internal water supply. According to Mr. Ekpo-Ita security isn't a challenge as the Anti-cultism Police unit located in the facility has given them adequate cover.
"Cultural Center, Calabar is the most secured place to hold your event in Calabar". He boasted.
