Int'l Women in Engineering Day: Poly Don Advocates for participation of more girls in STEM

AWKA - As the world celebrates  International Day, the Rector, Federal Polytechnic Oko, Engr. Dr. Francisca Unoma Nwafulugo, FSNE has called for adequate participation of Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas.

Dr. Nwafuluo mentioned this during this year's International Women in Engineering Day celebration in Awka, Anambra State. According to the her, STEM education was necessary to transform gender norms in the education system and improve quality learning opportunities for girls noting that many students shy away from mathematics subject and needed to be encouraged as it was one of the key subject needed to become an engineer.

"Women engineers need to be role models to catch them young , encourage them to come up and groom them in the area of mathematics. They should be determined, be a team player and work with their male counterparts. Time has gone when parents feel women education ends in the kitchen. Girls can go far in the academic sector " she said.

She further advised parents to invest in the academics of the female child as girls have a role to contribute in the development of the society.

Dr. Nwafulugo who was an award recipient of the " Female Engineering Heroe" however commended the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) for finding her worthy to be honored.

Earlier in her remarks the Chairman APWEN Awka Chapter Engr.  Nneka Ifeyinwa Ezeani said International Women in Engineering Day was marked every 23rd June to celebrate the amazing work that women engineers around the world were doing in supporting lives and livelihoods every day.

According to her, the objective of the association was to encourage engineering studies and practices amongst female Nigerian's.

"We have invited some students from different secondary schools in Awka for a mathematics quiz competition".

She informed that, "Winners of this competition will be appreciated with some cash prizes to encourage girls become applied scientist, leaders and increase awareness in engineering career".

Praising Women Engineers, the Chairman Nigerian Society of Engineers Awka Chapter Engr. Odinaka Okonkwo represented by Engr. Fimbarr Ajegwu said the event was commendable to celebrate women who have distinguished themselves in the profession and attained great strides as women engineers.

This year's celebration had as it's theme "Engineering Heroes"  which was celebrated with an award presentation to DDr. Francisca Nwafulugo being the first female Rector Federal Polytechnic Oko with other awardees including Engr. Ajani Adeyemo Razzaq Federal Controller of Works Federal Ministry of Power Works and Housing, Engr. Michael Okechukwu Obiekwe Director of Highways Anambra State and Engr. Ifeanyi Okoma.
