Let's Discuss: Four teams scales to finals in UNICAL Medical College quiz competition



The 2nd edition of first ever academic competition for Medical Students of the University of Calabar as put together by a onetime deputy senate president of the 6th senate UNICAL's Student Union Government kicked off Monday, 28th June 2021with 6 teams participating.


The event which saw 6 lectures and consultants of both the University of Calabar Medical School and Teaching Hospital adopting 6 different teams each as sponsors to the competition also saw only four teams qualifying for the final stage of the competition holding Friday, 2nd July 2021.


At the end of the preliminary of the competition, four teams comprising Prof.  Ndoma Egba, Prof. Imabong Etuk, Prof. Hogan Itam and Dr. Vincent Nwagbara made it for the finals of the competition with Prof. Ndoma-Egba's  team topping the competition with 31%, while Prof. Victor Ansa and Prof. E. Ngim teams were evicted. 


Speaking during the event, Mrs. Verval Egbe, Deputy senate president and lead organizer of the competition said she decided to create the event out of her passion to see students engage in intellectual discuss as well as sharpen and horn their skills academically.


The event which will climax Friday 2nd July will see the remaining four teams competing for the star prize of N70,000 while the runner up goes home with N50,000.

Speaking with TDN, some medical students expressed satisfaction with the process the events went as they said there was no room for manipulation.

Ndukwe Okorie a 5th years Medical student who represented Prof. Ngim's said it was a fair healthy competition which encouraged them to think fast and read in between the lines. While he promised that his team which came last in this year's competition will come out tops next year. 

Ikechukwu, one of the students who represented Prof. Ndoma-Egba said the he's happy with the improvement in the competition compared to 2019 when the first edition was hosted. 

He said he's confident that his team will win the star prize come Friday, while appreciating the conceiver of the idea 


One of the quiz masters who also doubled as the chief judge of the event, Dr. Paul Odey, had this to say "It is fantastic, the organisers have done so well, this is a way of making us challenge our brains, the children Re bright, they've really done so well."
