Again Cross River State House of Assembly Losses Member to Death

A two term lawmaker and member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Elizabeth Edem Ironbar has been reported dead. TDN can authoritatively report.

According to family sources, Mrs. Ironbar who represented Akpabuyo state Constituency in the 8th and 9th Assembly is said to have died on Tuesday night after a protracted illness.

Her death will bring the figures to a total of four members from the 8th and 9th Assembly who have died during governor Ayade's tenure as Cross River State Governor.

In the 8th Assembly, Stephen Ukpukpen (Obudu PDP), and Simon Nkoro Egbung (Ikom 2, PDP) died within three months of each other in 2018.

In the 9th Assembly, Mr. Godwin Akwaji (Obudu, PDP) passed away in June 2020. And today, Lady Elizabeth Ironbar has joined the queue.

Rt Hon Elizabeth Ironbar, Member representing Akpabuyo State

Until her death was Chairman House Committee on NDDC, Women Affairs, Social Welfare & General Development.

She will be remembered as a tough politician, Ironbar is said to have negotiated her way for her two terms in office despite not being the preferred candidate of party chieftains who wanted a male loyalist.

She was one of those members who refused to follow governor Ben Ayade to the All Progressives Congress despite the defection wave and accompanying  threats and lobbying.

If there was any bill Ironbar fought for, ir was the Cross River State Disability Commission bill.

She has been described by many as  dogged, humane, diligent, influential and capacity personified legislator who at all times even against all odds stands for truth, equity and justice.

Ironbar was also one of the few legislators who openly supported Hon Justice Akon Ita Ikpeme's confirmation as Chief Judge of Cross River State.
