Ebom/Ebijakara Crisis: P4P trains Sec. Sch. Students on EWER and Peace Building

Partners for Peace in the Niger Delta, a network dedicated to promoting peace in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria has trained over 150 Secondary School Students in four communities of Ebom, Ebijakara, Usumotong and Ediba all in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State. 

The training which was centered on Early Warning and Peace Building was aimed at catching the children young while grooming them to become Peace Actors in their various communities, with the goal of ensuring a lasting peace process in the Bahumono Nation of Abi LGA. 

Addressing Newsmen at the end of a four day tour that saw team members of the Cross River State Chapter of Partners for Peace training the students in their various schools and communities, Ukorebi Esien, the Cross River State Coordinator of P4P, said the training is one of the activities of its 2021 Intervention project to help reduce the high rate of crisis in the state. 

He further explained that, P4P usually carry out at least one major intervention every year and that for 2021, their focus is on the Bahumono crisis that has consumed the entire Bahumono with Ebijakara, being displaced. 

He informed that the Early Warning and Peace Building training cumulated into the formation of Peace Clubs across the schools. Ukorebi revealed that the training and establishment of the Club was a well thought out plan that emanated from Advocacy visits and community mapping P4P carried out in the Bahumono. 

In his words: "Research shows that the Bahumono crisis is generational in nature aa it keeps resurfacing after one or two decades, therefore the training of the students as peace actors and the further establishment of Peace Club is part of our sustainability plan to help sustain the peace they now enjoy."

"These students in Secondary Schools today looking so innocent will in the next 10 or 20 years become the actors and movers of their various communities, so we are preparing and shaping them to become Peace Actors and Advocates instead of crisis actors." He said. 

Also speaking, Mr. Cletus Bassey, the project team lead and Chairman of Proposal/Report drafting committee, P4P, informed that their next sets of activities will include training of some farmers on alternative livelihood such as fish farm, confectioneries, hair dressing, liquid soap and bleach making, snail and African Salad farming etc. He said the project will will be rounded up with a community cohort dialogue sessions with key stakeholders from the four communities of Ebom, Ebijakara, Usumotong and Ediba and a Peace Rally will be held that will lead to the establishment of a Subchapter of Partners for Peace in Abi LGA. 

While in Ebom, the Principal of Bahumono Secondary Grammar School, BASGRAMS, Elder Ikpi Ofem said he was elated that Partners for Peace has come in to their rescue with a well thought out sustainability plan for a long lasting Peace in Bahumono. 

The students took turns to appreciate Partners for Peace for the knowledge shared with them on peace building while promising to sustain and grow their various clubs. 

Recall that, Partners for Peace had on the 21st of September while celebrating the World Peace Day 2021, called on the state government to as a matter urgency Implement the report presented by Ndoma-Egba's led Peace Committee on Ebom And Ebijakara crisis. In the same vain the, network had also called on community, Political, Religious leaders as well as as the youths of Erie clan in Biase LGA to call themselves to order and amicably resolve the Crisis that has bedeviled the entire Erie clan.
