C'River 2023: Group drags PDP Others to open up on Zoning

As the 2023 General Elections draws near with several politicians and political parties scheming and putting up permutations for or against their interest in terms of zoning, a sociocultural group, known as Cross River Southern Senatorial District Assembly has called on the PDP and other Parties to make a pronouncement on zoning to reduce tension and political crisis.

According to a statement signed by the chief of party of the group, Mr. John Offiong, the silence in PDP most of these parties has caused political tension with brothers being at dagger drawn against themselves. He lamented a situation where there's a growing concern regarding the conversation around zoning, stating that if not arrested might result into a colossal political crisis.

"The conversation around zoning is daily growing into a disturbance that must be put in check to avoid collateral damage, not just in our politics but communal lifestyle."John said.

Offiong used the opportunity to appreciate governor Ayade whom he said has towed the path of honor for openly and severally declared that the APC Governorship ticket will be going to the South.

"As a peace loving people with great concerns for the development of Cross River State and the peaceful coexistence of Cross Riverians as well as their wellbeing, we use this medium to appreciate Governor Ben Ayade, governor of Cross River for standing by the truth and on the side of honor.
Governor Ayade had repeatedly made it clear without mincing words that power is returning back to the South in 2023.
And for this particular declaration and subsequent actions that he will be taking to ensure the reality of his declaration, we say thank you your Excellency." The statement reads in part.

The statement which called on the south to unite against those who want to undermine the South as it approaches the 2023 elections reads in full:

" It is with great joy that we appreciate God for bringing us all into this fateful year of 2022, we therefore as members of Cross River Southern Senatorial District Assembly wish all Cross Riverians a happy New Year even as we pray for God's protection and provision for us all.

As we get closer towards the 2023 General Elections, there have been divergent views with grave concerns as it regards the Gubernatorial seat of our dear Cross River State.

Gradually the system is becoming heated up with political gladiators in the state caught up against each other. Members of the People's Democratic Party are dagger drawn against themselves and this is spreading like wild fire into the daily conversations of the ordinary Cross Riverian on our streets. The conversation around zoning is daily growing into a disturbance that must be put in check to avoid collateral damage, not just in our politics but communal lifestyle.

It is in a bid to avoid further escalation of this discussion that has already infiltrated our homes with brother turned against brother that we, members of Cross River Southern Senatorial District Assembly are calling on the leadership of the People's Democratic Party and all other parties to as a matter of urgent public interest declare which political zone it has zoned its governorship ticket to, in the same manner which the All Progressives Congress in Cross River State through governor Ben Ayade has done.

As a peace loving people with great concerns for the development of Cross River State and the peaceful coexistence of Cross Riverians as well as their wellbeing, we use this medium to appreciate Governor Ben Ayade, governor of Cross River for standing by the truth and on the side of honor.
Governor Ayade had repeatedly made it clear without mincing words that power is returning back to the South in 2023.
And for this particular declaration and subsequent actions that he will be taking to ensure the reality of his declaration, we say thank you your Excellency.

It is on this strength that we call on the People's Democratic Party and other political parties to declare their stands on this issue so as to avoid the unimaginable political crisis looming around us.

The system is already heated  up and this is the right time for the PDP to speak up and calm nerves. Venatius Ikem, state chairman of the People's Democratic Party should not tell Cross Riverians that his party do not recognize zoning because:

1. Zoning and Politics of Rotation of power is clearly a constitutional Provision in the PDP`s constitution which draws its strength from the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

2. In 2018 during the runup of the 2019 General Elections Stakeholders from the PDP and across party lines met and decided to zone the Gubernatorial seat to the North for the sake of equity.
Prominent members of the party were signatories to that document. And this document is in public domain this again is a clear indication that the PDP supports and supported zoning during the 2019 election.

3. The Cross River State Chapter of the People's Democratic Party, currently under the leadership of Barr. Venatius Ikem in 2014, through governor Liyel Imoke made several public pronouncements which led to power rotating to the North. As a fall out of that decision, no other senatorial district produced a governorship aspirant in PDP and at the general election, no party produced a candidate outside the North.

4. Barr. Ikem would not deny the fact that his position as State Chairman of the People's Democratic Party today in Cross River State is a function of rotational politics, he is aware of the scheming and politicking that transpired leading to his emergence as state chairman, he is therefore required to do the needful.

Cross River State Southern Senatorial District Assembly is hereby warning that it will not fold its hands and watch while the state is being consume in this zoning crisis that is looming. It therefore calls on all well meaning Cross Riverians to come together and build a formidable state across party lines. Devoid of sentiment and personal aggrandisement. Any Political that refuses to produce a southern candidate as its flag bearer for the 2023 Gubernatorial Elections should not just expect to fail but should expect a colossal failure as never in the history of Cross as the South been united as this.

We also call on the South which we strongly believe its their turn to produce the next Governor of Cross River State to be resolute, focused and committed across party line towards the actualization of this dream. Let us state it unequivocally that even in our quest to ensure a Southern Governor come 2023, we will not sacrifice competence on the alter of zoning. We will ensure that who ever finally emerges as governor will make us proud."

John Offiong
Chief of Party
