Leader of Bakassi Legislature was Legally Impeached following Constitutional Provisions

The leader of Bakassi Legislative Council, Rt. Hon Emmanuel Effiong has been impeached. 

According to a circular signed by 6 out of the 10 lawmakers in the Legislative chambers, Effiong was impeached as a result allegations bordering on gross misconduct, inefficiency and high-handedness. 

One of the legislature informed that Effiong's impeachment is in accordance with the provisions of the law with direct bearings from section 33, subsection 2(c) of the Cross River State local government law, number 22 of 2007. 

Speaking further, the lawmaker said, "we have lost confidence in his leadership and thus resolved that Emmanuel Michael Effiong, and he ceases to function and keep office as leader, Bakassi legislative council. Aside his financial undoing he cannot lead us from a minority party, People's Democratic Party (PDP)."

Consequently, Hon Edem Effiom Ekeng representing ward 5 in Bakassi has been elected new leader to fill the vacant position with other offices reshuffled as the development brought about several vacant offices.

Addressing his colleagues, the new leader said the development was a needed change that have true democracy that will pave way for legislative success in the local government council. 

But in a related development, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Effiong remains adamat stating that he still remains the leader of the house, while accusing his colleagues of attempting to impeach him illegally without following due process. Effiong maintained that he still remains the leaders as his alleged impeachment did not enjoy the support of two third majority of the legislators as required by law.
