Rotimi Ameachi in Calabar

In the wake of the forthcoming presidential election in Nigeria, many of the aspirants have among other states deemed it very crucial to make Cross River State one of their campaign ground as a hand full have visited the state to woo delegates of their various parties ahead of the primary election slated for this month.

One of such visits which shouldn't go unnoticed is that of a one time governor of Rivers State and current minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Rotimi Ameachi which to me was very significant.

Amaechi's unprecedented visit had several significance which Cross Riverians were supposed to tap into.

Amaechi is the current minister of transportation and a presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress whose track records in the transport sector are visible to the blind, especially the reintroduction of the railway services into the nation's transportation system.

One notable fact in Amaechi's visit that wasn't visible in the visit of other aspirants across party lines is the crowd in his entourage, not just the crowd but the quality of the people, he was exscouted by over 70% of APC governorship aspirants in the 2019 elections, a large number of both serving and former National Assembly members across the 6 geopolitical zones, which depicts wide acceptability across the country. A large chunk of both serving and former speakers of States Houses of Assembly were also found in his entourage. For me, this shows Amaechi as a man who doesn't forget his friends and his constituency.

Ameachi, is one of those few politicians in Nigeria with a humble political beginning.
Rotimi started politics as the secretary of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) in Ikwerre LGA, Rivers State. Afterwards, he became the Special Assistant to the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Sir (Dr.) Peter Odili. Also, he as was a member of the Board of West Africa Glass Industry and RisonPalm Nigeria Limited.

In 1999, he was elected into the Rivers State House of Assembly and eventually became the speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly through Peter Odili's influence.

As speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, He was the Pioneer and 2 term Chairman of Conference of Speakers of States Assemblies of Nigeria. This gives answer to why Speakers of States Assemblies were in his entourage.

Amaechi's visit to Cross River State saw him visiting the traditional stool in the state via the Cross River State Traditional Rulers headed by HRM, Etinyim Etim-Okon Edet.

Amaechi also visited his friend and colleague, Governor Ben Ayade at government house after which he met with stakeholders and party delegates.

I believe his visit will be a blessing to the state if he emerges president of Nigeria, because he must have been reminded to complete the various projects in the state that relates to his ministry, especially the deep sea port and the dredging of Calabar port.
