Ayade Has No Atom of Power to Dethrone the Obol Lopon of Nko -Obla

Ukorebi Esien |30th June 2022

A former Presidential aide to President Buhari and legal luminary, Chief Okio Obono-Obla has said that Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State has no right to dethrone the Obol Lopon of Nko and the Village Head of Oyadama.

Obla maintained that stating that the Government of Cross River State has no such powers as the powers of enthroning and dethroning of a traditional ruler lies on the people's tradition.

According to a statement made by him on his social media handle on Facebook, the Yakurr Traditionalist emphasised that the Obol can only vacate office and seize to carryout his traditional functions by death. The Obol Lopon of Nko is a monarch for life, not even the Nko people can dethrone him

Obla added that the Obol can only be removed by government if he is a clan head or an appointee of government.

"Obol LOPON under the Yakurr traditional political system is both a priest and monarch. He is usually the head Priest of his matrilineal family(Lejimo)fertility shrine(yose).

He is not an appointee of government.
In law you can only remove an appointee when you are vested with the power to appoint him.

If the Obol LOPON of Nko is a clan head , then government can remove him as a clan head and withdraw his certificate .
But government cannot dethrone him in his capacity and status as OBOL LOPON
Nobody can dethrone Obol LOPON"
His statement reads in parts.
