Court Sacks PDP Lawmaker in C'River, Orders Rerun

An Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Calabar, has ordered the immediate withdrawal of the certificate of return issued to Dr. Effiom Ekeng Edet of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was recently announced winner of Akpabuyo State Constituency by-election conducted early this year.

Upholding the petition filed by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bassey Ekpo ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should conduct re-run election in disputed areas that were marred by violence within 90 days.

Recall that INEC had conducted a by-election earlier this year to fill in the vacant position in the Cross River State House of Assembly occasioned by the demise of late Hon. Elizabeth Ironbar who represented Akpabuyo state constituency. The election which was reportedly marred by violence in some areas saw the PDP candidate, Effiom Ekeng Edet scoring 5,866 votes to beat his closest rival and All Progressives Congress, APC candidate, Bassey Ekpo who scored 5,363 votes.

Ukorebi Esien | 03 March 2020

The Director General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Janet David Ekpenyong, has applauded the governor, Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade for instituting the No-mask-no-movement Executive order.

Ekpenyong who noted that the executive order on mask wearing is one of the best strategy to curb the spread of coronavirus in the State applauded the governor for the smart moves. She said although the state hasn't recorded any case yet as all four samples sent for test returned negative, but there's still need to enforce proactive measures that will continually safeguard the state.

The DG made this known when she  accompanied the Governor and his amiable wife, Dr. Linda Ayade to inspect the mass production of Nose mask ongoing at the Cross River State Garment Factory.

"I want to commend the efforts of the Governor, Senator Professor Ben Ayade and his wife Dr Linda Ayade who's here supervising activities at the garment factory to ensure that all Cross Riverians have access to face mask irrespective of where they reside, class and status." Ekpenyong said.

"As Chairman of the Covid19 task force on prevention and control, our cardinal target is to prevent the Covid19 virus and the use of face masks is a brilliant strategy which the governor had earlier given orders to be implemented. The governor had earlier ordered that everyone on the streets of Calabar and other parts of the state must be on face mask if they must go outside,  that is why we are all here with Her Excellency, Our Passion driven first Lady, Dr Linda Ayade, to supervise the mass production of the nose mask at the Garment Factory and ascertain the quality of this personal protective equipment." She noted.

"Earlier in the day,the governor himself along with his wife had distributed a tangible amount of this PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to Cross Riverians who can came out here in their numbers  and plans have already been concluded to decentralize the distribution points so that everyone can get them without subjecting them to any form of hardship." She concluded.

Recall that TDN had published within the week how Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State imposed a No-Mask-No-Movement on Cross Riverians, as part of the state's measures to combat the Covid19 pandemic in the state.
